The son of Luke Stokes, born in England in 1820, and Mary Weilding, born in England in 1822, George Stokes came to Stearns County in 1866 when he was 16. After living in New York City, the family took up farming in Lynden Township. Luke learned pioneer farming, and soon after settling in the area with his family, he bought 80 acres of his own. Over time, he purchased over 200 acres, and along with raising stock and cultivating and harvesting the fields, he built up the farm. Luke married Eliza Beilstein Carlile. The couple had four children and were members of the Clearwater Methodist Church. His brother Sam purchased their parents’ homestead, updated the buildings, and applied up-to-date agricultural methods to the farmland, producing crops with state-of-the-art equipment. Sam married Carrie Miller, daughter of Daniel and Harriet Miller.
